      Irises

This is one of many paintings and prints of irises by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. Vincent van Gogh was living at the asylum at Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. There, in the last year before his death, he created almost 130 paintings. Within the first week, he began Irises, working from nature in the asylum's garden. The cropped composition divided into broad areas of vivid color with monumental irises overflowing its borders.

Irises was painted before his first attack at the asylum. There is a lack of the high tension which is seen in his later works. He called the painting "the lightning conductor for my illness" because he felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint.

A little over a year earlier Van Gogh painted Cafe at Night or (Cafe Terrace At Night) and Night Stars (Starry Night Over The Rhone). Irises was completed around the same time Van Gogh painted The Starry Night.

The original work was produced in May (1889) and is currently at The Getty Museum in Malibu California.

      Sunflowers

Sunflowers are the subject of two series of still life paintings by Vincent van Gogh. The earlier series, executed in Paris in 1887, depicts the flowers lying on the ground, while the second set, executed a year later in Arles, shows bouquets of sunflowers in a vase.

In the artist's mind, both sets were linked by the name of his friend Paul Gauguin, who acquired two of the Paris versions. About eight months later Van Gogh hoped to welcome and to impress Gauguin again with Sunflowers, now part of the painted Décoration for the Yellow House that he prepared for the guest room of his home in Arles, where Gauguin was supposed to stay.

This version of Sunflowers was painted by Van Gogh about a month after he painted Night Stars (Starry Night Over the Rhone) and Cafe At Night or (Cafe Terrace At Night).

The original work was produced in August (1888) and is currently at the Museum Pinakothek in Munich, Germany

      Vase of White Roses

The still life paintings were painted in 1890 by Vincent van Gogh in Saint-Rémy. At the time the work was painted Van Gogh was readying himself to leave the Saint-Rémy asylum for the quiet town of Auvers-sur-Oise outside of Paris. The painting reflects the optimism Van Gogh felt at that time about his future, both in his choice of flowers as a subject and the colors used.

As the end of his stay in Saint-Rémy and the days ahead in Auvers-sur-Oise neared, Van Gogh conveyed his optimism and enthusiasm by painting flowers.

When Van Gogh left Saint-Rémy on May 16 both rose paintings with very thick paint were left behind to dry. Van Gogh anticipated that it would take one month for the paintings to dry; they arrived in Van Gogh's last residence in Auvers-sur-Oise by June 24 1890

This version of Sunflowers was painted by Van Gogh about a month after he painted Night Stars (Starry Night Over the Rhone) and Cafe At Night or (Cafe Terrace At Night).

The original work was produced in May (1890) and is currently at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.
